It provides a systematic and thorough introduction to the pronunciation of English to help intermediate and more advanced students improve their production of the spoken language.

After a short introduction to pronunciation problems the author explains how the speech organs work; he then deals with each sound separately before dealing with words in combination, rhythm-patterns and intonation. Practice material is given at intervals throughout the book. The particular difficulties of the speakers of certain other languages are noted, including Hindi and Arabic, and remedial exercises provided.

Like the first edition, the second edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching, such as grammar translation, audiolingualism, communicative language teaching, and the natural approach. The text examines each approach and method in terms of its theory of language and language learning, goals, syllabus, teaching activities, teacher and learner roles, materials, and classroom techniques. In addition to the approaches and methods covered in the first edition, this edition includes new chapters, such as whole language, multiple intelligences, neurolinguistic programming, competency-based language teaching, cooperative language learning, content-based instruction, task-based language teaching, and The Post-Methods Era. Teachers and teachers-in-training will discover that this second edition is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the major and minor teaching methods used around the world. The book seeks not only to clarify the assumptions behind these methods and their similarities and differences, but also to help teachers explore their own beliefs and practices in language teaching.

They offer ideas and strategies for effective classroom practice, the setting of coursework and the integration of different skills. Teaching and Assessing Practical Skills in Science is written by an experienced examiner and teacher. It focuses on practical skills because this is the area of the Science curriculum that poses the greatest challenges to teachers and students alike. The opening chapters discuss the importance of developing practical skills and look at how practical work can be planned and integrated into Science courses. The author offers guidance on planning investigations and goes on to examine a range of skills such as working safely in the laboratory, making and recording observations and measurements, handling data, drawing conclusions and evaluating practicals. Also included is a chapter on the assessment of practical work. The author has included stimulating activities for teachers, end-of-chapter questions to consolidate learning, a list of sources of information, a glossary, an apparatus checklist and photocopiable worksheets.

Author: Hayward Publisher: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS

The handbooks provide clear, practical and up-to-date guidance on teaching and assessing skills, across a range of subject areas, for 1GCSE and O Level. They offer ideas and strategies for effective classroom practice, coursework setting and the integration of different skill. Teaching and Assessing Skills in Geography is written by an experienced teacher trainer and examiner. The first chapter introduces the subject and sets the objectives for the other chapters. Chapter 2 looks at how to convert an examination syllabus into a teaching programme, with illustrations of how to use case studies from the local area and further afield. Chapter 3 identifies the ways in which Geography can be taught to students of varying abilities, while Chapter 4 investigates a number of different teaching approaches and learning activities. In Chapter 5 the author considers a selection of geographical resources and describes how these can be used. Chapter 6 provides advice on how to incorporate coursework and fieldwork activities into teaching programmes, and Chapter 7 suggests ways of assessing different types of work.

Author: Sibley Publisher: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS
