"This made it incumbent upon me to omit certain vital facts," Malgonkar writes in the introduction , "such as, for instance, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar's secret assurance to Mr L B Bhopatkar, that his client, Mr V D Savarkar, had been implicated as a murder suspect on the flimsiest ground." The excised portions, along with rare photographs and documents from the National Archives are included in this 11th edition. This book is a reprint of the 1978 original, timed for the 60th anniversary of the event, with some additions in the form of rare photographs and documents unearthed by the publishers and not the author Manohar Malgonkar, now 95 and a virtual recluse. His account of the conspiracy, 30 years after the event, was a landmark effort that cemented his reputation as a historian. Of the six conspirators, Nathuram Godse, who fired the shot heard around the world, and Narayan Apte, who was by his side, were hanged. The other four were: Digambar Badge, who turned approver; Vishnu Karkare; Gopal Godse, Nathurams younger brother; and Madanlal Pahwa. Malgonkar met them after they had served their life sentences and they spoke to him at great length. All four provided information they had not revealed before and Malgonkar produced perhaps the most complete account of the plot to assassinate Gandhi.

Author: MANOHAR MALGONKAR Publisher: LOTUS

Ranjit Singh s death in 1839 and the subsequent decline of the Lahore Durbar, gave British the opportunity to stake their claim in the region till now fiercely guarded by Maharaja Ranjit Singh s army. Captain Amarinder Singh chronicles in detail the two Anglo-Sikh wars of 1845 and 1848. Under emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan the court produced some of the greatest art of the era. Artists and craftsmen came from Europe, Iran and all over the Indian subcontinent to the Mughal palaces to work. From the architecture of the Taj Mahal to the intricacies of miniatures, the artwork of the Mughal court still capivates scholars and the public alike. How did these iconic masterpieces come into being? Who built them and for what purpose?

Susan Stronge s lavishly illustrated new book tells the stories behind the artwork. She traces the route from the craftsmen in their workshops to the royal family and nobles who commissioned the pieces. Made for Mughal Emperors, which contains many images never before published in the west, provides an in-depth look at the artistic legacy of the Mughals. She paints a picture of art and culture under these legendary rulers, providing a fascinating insight into the workings of the Mughal Court.

Author: SUSAN STRONGE Publisher: LUSTR

A Treasury of Indian Wisdom traces its intellectual and spiritual history over 5000 years.

The anthology begins with Vedic hymns, journeys into the heart of Vedantic philosophy through the Upanishads, and discusses the fundamental truths offered by Buddhist and Jain monks. Presenting the beauty and devotion in the verses of the Bhakti, Sufi and Sikh gurus, it finally evolves into the contemporary ideologies of the moderns like Jawaharlal Nehru, J. Krishnamurti and Osho. In keeping with the spirit of pluralism, the book puts together the wide-ranging wisdom of saints and scholars, thinkers and reformers, poets and leaders.

were killed in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast and in Naxaliteaffected
areas.
One-sixth of all Indians today live in areas of armed conflict. Seeking
solutions, this book is a holistic examination of present armed conflicts as
well as the past ones in Punjab and Mizoram, illuminating their common
roots, as well as the responses of the state and civil society.
The authors show how insurgencies are propelled by a complex mix of
issues: the denial of justice and rights, identity concerns, and the breakdown
of the social and symbolic order, rather than merely poverty and lack of
education. Draconian laws like the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and
measures like encounters, crackdowns and Salwa Judum aggravate the
sense of collective victimhood and feelings of alienation from the national
community. Furthermore, the long-term use of force leads to militarization
of the state and society and a flourishing illegal economy.
Uniquely the authors also explore the gendered aspects of such conflicts.
Women are considered signifiers of the community’s honour, to be
protected or violated, and hence become subject to greater control than at
normal times. Domestic violence gets enhanced and even where women
become combatants, men sanction and ultimately control their roles.
This book is a powerful critique of national security approaches for
resolution of armed conflicts.

Author: ANURADHA M CHENOY, KAMAL MITRA CHENOY Publisher: PENGUIN

Since then, however, its fortunes have been mixed: pushed onto the backburner during the 1990s, it has in recent years retuned to the center of scholarly debate in international relations. Yet despite its significance in international relations theory, realism plays little role in contemporary international political theory. It is often associated with a form of crude realpolitik that ignores the role of ethical considerations in political life.
Political Thought and International Relations explores an alternative understanding of realism. The contributors view realism chiefly as a diverse and complex mode of political and ethical theorizing rather than either a value-neutral branch of social science or the unreflective defense of the national interest. They analyze a variety of historical and philosophical themes, probing the potential and the pathologies of realist thought. A number of the chapters offer critical interpretations of key figures in the canon of twentieth century realism, including Hans Morgenthau, E. H. Carr, and Reinhold Niebuhr. Others seek to widen the lens through which realism is usually viewed, exploring the writings of Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, and Leo Strauss. Finally, a number of the contributors engage with general issues in political theory, including the meaning and value of pessimism, the relationship between power and ethics, the role of normative political theory, and what might constitute political 'reality.' Straddling international relations and political theory, this book makes a significant contribution to both fields.

Author: DUNCAN BELL Publisher: OUP

Arguing that attitudes towards boundaries are premised on assumptions about the locus of threats to vital interests, Rahul Rao digs beneath two major normative orientations towards boundaries - cosmopolitanism and nationalism - which structure thinking on questions of public policy and identity. Insofar as the Third World is concerned, hegemonic versions of both orientations are underpinned by simplistic imageries of threat. In the cosmopolitan gaze, political and economic crises in the Third World are attributed mainly to factors internal to the Third World state with the international playing the role of heroic saviour. In Third World nationalist imagery, the international is portrayed as a realm of neo-imperialist predation from which the domestic has to be secured. Both images capture widely held intuitions about the sources of threats to human rights, but each by itself provides a resolutely partial inventory of these threats. By juxtaposing critical accounts of both discourses, Rao argues that protest sensibilities in the current conjuncture must be critical of hegemonic variants of both cosmopolitanism and nationalism. The second half of the book illustrates what such a critique might look like. Journeying through the writings of James Joyce, Rabindranath Tagore, Edward Said and Frantz Fanon, the activism of anti-globalisation protesters, and the dilemmas of queer rights activists, Rao demonstrates that important currents of Third World protest have long battled against both the international and the domestic, in a manner that combines nationalist and cosmopolitan sensibilities.

Author: RAHUL RAO Publisher: OUP

It is the first full account of the situation since Obama took office. The authors, a former senior official on President Clinton's National Security Council Staff and a leading authority on international politics, lay out in clear and accessible detail the technical and political dimensions of Iran's nuclear program, and the ongoing diplomacy to stop it. They show how Israel's panic about Iran's nuclear threat--combined with its policy toward the Palestinians--is undermining Jerusalem's alliance with America. Tehran, meanwhile, is exploiting tensions between Arab regimes fearful of a nuclear Iran and an Arab public that is both angry about the plight of the Palestinians and resentful of Israel's nuclear monopoly in the region. The Sixth Crisis brilliantly illuminates this fateful juncture. The status quo is on an incline to disaster, and the hopes that President Obama has inspired are threatened by the toxic mixture of Israeli-Palestinian stalemate and Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The time bomb of Iran's defiance and Israel's panic has the potential to spark a firestorm that would imperil US interests in the Middle East and engulf Obama's presidency. With the outcome of this unfolding crisis far from certain, The Sixth Crisis is required reading not only for policymakers, but also for anyone interested in world politics.

Author: Dana Allin and Steven Simon Publisher: OUP

author, Simon Winchester
For thousands of years the Atlantic Ocean was viewed by mariners with
a mixture of awe, terror and amazement – an impassable barrier to the
unknown. In recent times, as we fly high above it without so much as
bothering to look down, this vast sea has been reduced to the status of
a mere passageway between continents – 'the pond'. It is easy to forget
that the Atlantic has been the setting for some of the most important
exchanges, ideas and challenges in the history of civilisation – a
fulcrum around which the power and influence of the modern world has
long been distributed.
In this narrative tour de force, Simon Winchester dramatises the life
story of the Atlantic, from its birth in the farther recesses of geological
time to its eventual extinction millions of years in the future. At the heart
of the book is the story of humankind's evolving attitude to and
relationship with the ocean. For millennia it has shaped the lives and
cultures of those who have lived along its shores and have navigated
its waters.
Travelling around its edges and across its huge expanse, Winchester reports from the places that
encapsulate the Atlantic's most fascinating stories – the age of exploration and the colonisation of
the Americas; the rise and fall of the slave trade, and the flourishing of transatlantic commerce;
extraordinary tales of sea-borne emigration; and the great naval battles that have left an indelible
imprint on Atlantic history.
The result is an utterly enthralling mixture of history, science and reportage from a master of
narrative non-fiction, and an exhilarating account of a magnificent body of water.

Author: SIMON WINCHESTER Publisher: HARPER COLLINS

It places subnational democracy in the context of the distinctive Anglo, French, German, and Scandinavian state traditions in Europe asking to what extent these are still relevant today. The Handbook adapts Lijphart\'s theory of democracy and applies it to the subnational levels in all the country chapters. A key theoretical issue is whether subnational (regional and local) democracy is derived from national democracy or whether it is legitimate in its own right. Besides these theoretical concerns it focuses on the practice of democracy: the roles of political parties and interest groups and also how subnational political institutions relate to the ordinary citizen. This can take the form of local referendums or other mechanisms of participation. The Handbook reveals a wide variety of practices across Europe in this regard. Local financial systems also reveal a great variety. Finally, each chapter examines the challenges facing subnational democracy but also the opportunities available to them to enhance their democratic systems. Among the challenges identified are: Europeanization, globalization, but also citizens disaffection and switch-off from politics. Some countries have confronted these challenges more successfully than others but all countries face them. An important aspect of the Handbook is the inclusion of all the countries of East and Central Europe plus Cyprus and Malta, who joined the EU in 2004 and 2007. This is the first time they have been examined alongside the countries of Western Europe from the angle of subnational democracy.

Author: John Loughlin, Frank Hendriks, and Anders Lidström Publisher: OUP

Drawing on vivid examples taken from a range of media coverage, participant observation at a Camp Obama, and interviews with leading political journalists, Jeffrey Alexander argues that images, emotion, and performance are the central features of the battle for power. While these features have been largely overlooked by pundits, they are, in fact, the primary foci of politicians and their staff. Obama and McCain painstakingly constructed heroic self-images for their campaigns and the successful projections of those images suffused not only each candidate's actual rallies, and not only their media messages, but also the ground game. Money and organization facilitate the ground game, but they do not determine it. Emotion, images, and performance do. Though an untested senator and the underdog in his own party, Obama succeeded in casting himself as the hero--and McCain the anti-hero--and the only candidate fit to lead in challenging times.

Author: JEFFEREY C ALEXANDER Publisher: OUP

At first incredulous, Margaret discovered that this was just the tip of an enormous iceberg. Up to 150,000 children, some as young as three years old, had been deported from children's homes in Britain and shipped off to a 'new life' in distant parts of the Empire, right up until as recently as 1970. Many were told that their parents were dead, and parents often believed that their children had been adopted in Britain. In fact, for many children it was to be a life of horrendous physical and sexual abuse far away from everything they knew. Margaret reveals how she unravelled this shocking secret and how it became her mission to reunite these innocent and unwilling exiles with their families in Britain before it was too late.

Author: Humphreys, Margaret Publisher: Corgi

The second-most populous nation in the world is beginning to wield the economic power expected of such a behemoth. Its border with Pakistan is a tinderbox, the subcontinent remains vulnerable to religious extremism, and a military rivalry between India and China could erupt in the future. India has long had the motivation for modernizing its military it now has the resources as well. What should we expect to see in the future, and what will be the likely ramifications? In Arming without Aiming, Stephen P. Cohen and Sunil Dasgupta answer those crucial questions.

Against this backdrop of new affluence and newfound access to foreign military technology, Cohen and Dasgupta investigate India s military modernization to find haphazard military change that lacks political direction, suffers from balkanization of military organization and doctrine, remains limited by narrow prospective planning, and is driven by the pursuit of technology free from military strategic objectives. The authors argue that the character of military change in India, especially the dysfunction in the political military establishment with regard to procurement, is ultimately the result of a historical doctrine of strategic restraint in place since the prime ministership of Jawarharlal Nehru. In that context, New Delhi s approach of arming without strategic purpose remains viable as India seeks great-power accommodation of its rise and does not want to look threatening. The danger lies in its modernization efforts precipitating a period of strategic assertion or contributing to misperception of India s intentions by Pakistan and China, its two most immediate rivals.

contemporary journals, plays and poems, the author provides wonderful
descriptions of British homes and servants, their tastes and fashions,
cultural idiosyncrasies, profligacy, sports, hunts and shoots, giving us,
with the relaxed familiarity of the after-dinner raconteur, a flavour of the
period. The book is peppered with a host of characters—astrologers,
jugglers, magicians, grass-widows, the ‘fishing fleet’, missionaries, nautch
girls, mavericks and eccentrics—who made India their home as the British
turned from traders to empire-builders, and is interspersed with period
photographs, paintings and sketches.

They turned him around. His glasses were cracked and he could not sit up He was coming in their way. Enemies thirsting for each other s blood, they were united on this point: this man had to be got rid of.

Focusing on the communal riots which rocked Ahmedabad in 2002, Esther David offers a series of impressionistic, sharply etched portraits of the city. From the breathtaking Sidi Saiyyed mosque and the unbridled joy of Uttarayan celebrations to the sheer terror and mindless bloodshed of the riots, these short pieces describe the place and try to understand the events that changed it forever.

These vignettes have one thing in common: the man with enormous wings. He impotently hovers over the narrative, silently lamenting the fierce bloodlust of a city that once worshipped him and grew up on his lessons of non-violence.

The Man with Enormous Wings is a powerful, compelling book, not only because of the relevance and importance of what it has to say but also for the manner in which it chooses to say it.

Author: ESTHER DAVID Publisher: PENGUIN

The clash between India and Pakistan over the coveted territory led to the emergence of Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered areas. While the social and political conditions in the former have been widely discussed, even among Kashmir experts there is little knowledge of Pakistanadministered Jammu & Kashmir (PAJK), particularly its political, cultural and social aspects.

Luv Puri analyses the crucial pre-Independence social and political processes which resulted in polarization within the state and the violence that wracked the region during Partition. He tracks the effect of those events on Pakistan s Punjab province and the ensuing impact on Pakistan s position on the Jammu & Kashmir issue.

The relationship between Pakistan and PAJK is an important aspect of Puri s research. He traces the history of migration from Mirpur to Britain and the Mirpuri diaspora s significant support to the early phase of militancy that arose in Jammu & Kashmir in 1989. This insurgency, which had its base in PAJK, promised independence from both India and Pakistan. The book also discusses the many transformations in the proindependence struggle from its inception to the present day.

In this insightful and entertaining book, Nayan Chanda follows the exploits of traders, preachers, adventurers, and warriors throughout history as they have shaped and reshaped the world. For Chanda, globalization is a process of ever-growing interconnectedness and interdependence that began thousands of years ago and continues to this day with increasing speed and ease.

In the end, globalization from the lone adventurer carving out a new trade route to the expanding ambitions of great empires is the product of myriad aspirations and apprehensions that define just about every aspect of our lives: what we eat, wear, ride, or possess is the product of centuries of human endeavor and suffering across the globe. Chanda reviews and illustrates the economic and technological forces at play in globalization today and concludes with a thought-provoking discussion of how we can and should embrace an inevitably global world.

The Western Hemisphere lies front and
center, while the Indian Ocean region is relegated to the edges, split up along the maps’ outer reaches. This convention
reveals the geopolitical focus of the now-departed twentieth century, for it was in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters that
the great wars of that era were lost and won. Thus, many Americans are barely aware of the Indian Ocean at all.
But in the twenty-first century this will fundamentally change. In Monsoon, a pivotal examination of the Indian Ocean
region and the countries known as “Monsoon Asia,” bestselling author Robert D. Kaplan deftly shows how crucial this
dynamic area has become to American power in the twenty-first century. Like the monsoon itself, a cyclical weather
system that is both destructive and essential for growth and prosperity, the rise of these countries (including India,
Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Burma, Oman, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Tanzania) represents a shift in the global balance
that cannot be ignored. The Indian Ocean area will be the true nexus of world power and conflict in the coming years. It
is here that the fight for democracy, energy independence, and religious freedom will be lost or won, and it is here that
American foreign policy must concentrate if America is to remain dominant in an ever-changing world.
From the Horn of Africa to the Indonesian archipelago and beyond, Monsoon explores the multilayered world behind the
headlines. Kaplan offers riveting insights into the economic and naval strategies of China and India and how they will
affect U.S. interests. He provides an on-the-ground perspective on the more volatile countries in the region, plagued by
weak infrastructures and young populations tempted by extremism. This, in one of the most nuclearized areas of the
world, is a dangerous mix.
The map of this fascinating region contains multitudes: Here lies the entire arc of Islam, from the Sahara Desert to the
Indonesian archipelago, and it is here that the political future of Islam will most likely be determined. Here is where the
five-hundred-year reign of Western power is slowly being replaced by the influence of indigenous nations, especially
India and China, and where a tense dialogue is taking place between Islam and the United States.
With Kaplan’s incisive mix of policy analysis, travel reportage, sharp historical perspective, and fluid writing, Monsoon
offers a thought-provoking exploration of the Indian Ocean as a strategic and demographic hub and an in-depth look at
the issues that are most pressing for American interests both at home and abroad. Exposing the effects of explosive
population growth, climate change, and extremist politics on this unstable region—and how they will affect our own
interests—Monsoon is a brilliant, important work about an area of the world Americans can no longer afford to ignore.

Author: Robert D. Kaplan Publisher: Random House

With this volume, Alan Taylor challenges the traditional story of colonial history by examining the many cultures that helped make America. Transcending the usual Anglocentric version of our colonial past, he recovers the importance of Native American tribes, African slaves, and the rival empires of France, Spain, the Netherlands, and even Russia in the colonization of North America. Moving beyond the Atlantic seaboard to examine the entire continent, American Colonies reveals a pivotal period in the global interaction of peoples, cultures, plants, animals, and microbes. In a vivid narrative, Taylor draws upon cuttingedge scholarship to create a timely picture of the colonial world characterized by an interplay of freedom and slavery, opportunity and loss.
Compelling, readable, and fresh, American Colonies is perhaps the most brilliant piece of synthesis in recent American historical writing. (Phillip J. In the first major narative history of the subject in more than a generation, David Mattingly brings life in Britain during four hundred years of Roman domination into vivid relief. Drawing on a wealth of new research and cutting through the myths and misunderstandings that commonly surround most perceptions of Roman Britain, An Imperial Possession describes a remote and culturally diverse province that required a heavy military presence both to keep its subjects in order and to exploit its resources for the empire. With his wonderful addition to the Penguin History of Britain series, Mattingly shows . . . just how interesting life could be on the outer fringes of the Roman Empire (The Sunday Telegraph).

Author: Mattingly, David Publisher: PENGUIN

'Failed states' are those on the peripheries of the global system, with either weak, nonexistent or dictatorial governments, allegedly incapable of satisfying the basic needs of their citizens and considered a danger to the world and to their own people. In this groundbreaking new book, celebrated thinker Noam Chomsky argues that America itself is a failed state, and is as such a danger to its people and, increasingly, to the world. He draws attention to the inescapable irony that the United States, long involved in democracybuilding adventures around the world, desperately needs to revitalize democracy far closer to home.

Author: Chomsky, Noam Publisher: HAMISH HAMILTON

Within a few weeks in 19412 a Japanese invasion had destroyed all this, almost effortlessly taking the impregnable fortress' of Singapore with its 80,000 strong garrison, and sweeping through South and Southeast Asia to the frontier of India itself. This revolutionary, absolutely gripping book brings to life the entire experience of South and Southeast Asia in this extraordinary period, telling the story from an Indian, Burmese, Chinese or Malay perspective as much as from that of the British or Japanese. Effectively it is the story of the birth of modern South and Southeast Asia and the hopes and fears of the dozens of forgotten armies' marching through the jungle battlefields, so many dying for causes swept away by the reality that emerged in 1945. Even as the British successfully fought back in the bloodiest battles in South and Southeast Asia's history, there was no going back to colonial rule.

Author: Bayly, Chris & Harper, Tim Publisher: ALLEN LANE

For ten days they pounded the city with over 9,000 tons of bombs, with the intention of erasing it entirely from the map. The fires they created were so huge they burned for a month and were visible for 200 miles.
The people of Hamburg had no time to understand what had hit them. As they emerged from their ruined cellars and air raid shelters, they were confronted with a unique vision of hell a sea of flame that stretched to the horizon, the burnedout husks of fire engines that had tried to rescue them, roads that had become flaming rivers of melted tarmac. Even the canals were on fire.

Worse still, they had to battle hurricaneforce winds to escape the blaze. The only safe places were the city's parks, but to reach them survivors had to stumble through temperatures of up to 800C and a blizzard of sparks strong enough to lift grown men off their feet.

Inferno is the culmination of several years of research and the first comprehensive account of the Hamburg firestorm to be published in almost thirty years.

Keith Lowe has interviewed eyewitnesses in Britain, Germany, and America, and gathered together hundreds of letters, diaries, firsthand accounts, and documents. His book gives the human side of an inhuman story the long, tense buildup to the Allied attack; the unparalleled horror of the firestorm itself; and the terrible aftermath. The result is an epic story of devastation and survival, and a muchneeded reminder of the human face of war.

Includes nineteen maps and thirtyone photographs, many never seen before

Author: Lowe, Keith Publisher: PENGUIN

Why, when the most direct route from Britain to Germany was through northwestern France, did the western allies first launch assaults on North Africa, Sicily and Rome? Why, if DDay was intended to be the start of the Allies' great thrust into Germany, did four hundred thousand men land five hundred miles to the south, in southern France, two months later? Why did the Allies not take Berlin, Vienna or Prague, and allow the Iron Curtain to descend where it did?One of the aims of the book is to show the degree to which the answers to these and many other key riddles of the Second World War turned on the personalities and relationships between two political masters Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt and the military commanders of their armed forces the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, General Sir Alan Brooke, and the US Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall. In reconstructing the debates between these four principals and many of the other leading senior Allied figures, Roberts draws upon the private papers of nearly seventy contemporaries and on verbatim accounts of Churchill's War Cabinet meetings never before reproduced in book form. The result is a strikingly intimate and enjoyable account, which recreates with dramatic immediacy the atmosphere, debates and manoeuvrings through which Allied grand strategy was forged, and shows clearly the impact of personality upon history.

Author: Roberts, Andrew Publisher: ALLEN LANE

Since its publication twenty years ago, J. M. Roberts's monumental History of the World has remained the unrivaled World History of our day (A.J.P. Taylor), selling more than a quarter of a million copies worldwide.
Now in an equally masterful performance, Roberts displays his consummate skills of exposition in telling the tale of the European continent, from its Neolithic origins and early civilizations of the Aegean to the advent of the twentyfirst century. A sweeping and entertaining history, The Penguin History of Europe comprehensively traces the development of European identity over the course of thousands of years, ranging across empires and religions, economics, science, and the arts. Roberts's astute and lucid analyses of the disparate spheres of learning that have shaped European civilization and our understanding of it make The Penguin History of Europe a remarkable journey through the last two centuries.

Author: Roberts, J M Publisher: PENGUIN

The Subjection of Women, written shortly after the death of Mill's wife, Harriet, stresses the importance of sexual equality. States, which had defined themselves from Thucydides to Bismarck by their claims to sovereign independence, gradually came together to create international organizations to promote peace, curb aggression, regulate diplomatic affairs, devise an international code of law, encourage social development and foster prosperity. The emergence of this network of global governance was not straightforward and the debate about its role is just as heated today as it was generations ago.

In this longawaited new book, Paul Kennedy, probably the bestselling historian now living, examines this key development in the history of our century. Beginning with the earliest forms of international organization, he goes on to trace the creation and changing role of the UN in the postwar era, and finally suggests how, in the face of new threats to security and the continued vigour of at least some nation states, the institution will need to change over the course of the twentyfirst century, arguing that we all share the responsibility to make the only world organization we possess work as well as possible.

Author: Kennedy, Paul Publisher: PENGUIN
